Sussex County League 2nd XI Division 2
Lewes Priory 2nds v Worthing 2nds at the Stanley Turner Ground, Lewes
LPCC 228-9 dec.(53 overs) - 12 points, lost to WCC 232-5 (44.3 overs) - 28 points.
Lewes won the toss for a change and elected to bat. Losing a wicket early on in the 8th over with the score on 10 didn't help. David Tungate and Richard Eborn dug in for a further 13 overs but only managed 33 runs in the time. When Eborn fell on 16 the total was just 43. Tungate doggedly battled on as he and Rashid Khan put on 50 runs for the 3rd wicket. Tungate was caught behind on 24 after 93 balls! Khan continued in fine style as Richard Seager and he tried pushing the run rate up as the total by now was just 100 after 37 overs. Khan fell on 55 in 50 balls. Brad Hambly's cameo 12 ball 16 helped and Seager finally fell on 23 with the score now 159 for 7 in the 44th over.
The introduction of Ned Barker at number 9 changed the tempo as he found the boundary on numerous occasions including a large six over long on. He was ably supported by Chris Dacey (10) and Joe Warren (16 not out). Priory finally declared in the allotted 53 overs with a respectable 228 for 9 and Barker 41 not out in only 25 balls! For Worthing T Chambers finished on 4 for 72 off 14 overs and S Felton 3 for 48 off 14.
In reply Worthing struggled with the pace of young 15 year old Tim Moses. He picked up the first wicket in the 7th over finding the edge and snaffled up by Khan at gully. The score was 19. However opener D Marshallsay and Stuart Carter kept him out for his first spell of 5 overs. They built a 71 run partnership to get to 90 in 20 overs before Marshallsay was caught by Khan off the spin of Barker. Carter carried on despite another wicket by Barker with Tom Lund. Between them they amassed 87 for the 4th wicket to get the score up to 195 in the 38th over and the match almost won. Lund was caught on 47 off the leg spin of Khan. Despite bringing Moses back for another 5 over spell no wickets came of it.
With the scores level ex first team wicket keeper and skipper Chris Baker came on for an over and took a wicket thanks to a sharp catch by Jacob Lee to dismiss Carter on 82. R James saw Worthing home with a four off Dacey's bowling to earn Worthing a 28 point victory - 232-5 after 44.3 overs. Priory picked up 12 points but were dimayed to hear that Keymer and Hassocks had beaten Stirlands and bagged 30 points to go ahead of Lewes leaving Priory bottom of the table at the end of a difficult season.
Rashid Khan deservedly was the Shore Design Man of the Match. Well there is always next year as Lewes 2nds stay in Division 2 next season despite being bottom thanks to the 1sts winning their match to end up 3rd. Keymer and Hassocks 2nds are relegated instead as their 1st team were bottom of Division 2.

Sussex County League 2nd XI Division 2
Lewes Priory 2nds v Stirlands 2nds at the Stanley Turner Ground, Lewes
LPCC 229-9 off 53 overs (30 points) beat SCC 60 all out in 27.1 overs (8 points)
Losing the toss again Lewes were put into bat on a wet wicket. Openers Chris Baker and David Tungate battled through the first 18 overs to get the score to 40 before Tungate fell to D Beal. Baker then put on a stand of 79 with skipper Richard Eborn in 21 overs before Eborn was caught on 31 with Lewes now on 119 in 39 overs. Having laid the foundation Priory then began to up the run rate with the incoming batsmen trying to force the pace and bat aggressively. Rashid Khan put on 39 for the 3rd wicket with Baker who was finally bowled by Lynch on 79 off 116 balls. Priory were now on 158 fo 3 after 44 overs.
Stirlands' opener Leo Beal was brought back into the attack and picked up a wicket an over for his final 5 overs. Khan was his first victim caught on 23. Chris Dacey (15), Tom Prideaux de Lacy (13), and Brad Hambly (22) all contributed in getting the total up to 229 in the allotted 53 overs - quite a healthy score with the outfield as slow as it was and the wicket bowler-friendly. Leo Beal finished with figures of 5 for 28 in his 12 overs.
10 man Stirlands then found out how tricky it was to bat on as Lewes struck early in the 2nd over. After 7 overs Stirlands were in deep trouble, 7 for 3, as Hambly and Dacey tore through them. A 4th wicket stand of 21 gave Stirlands a little hope but the introduction of the spin of Duncan Bain broke the partnership with the score just 28. Joe Warren replaced Dacey and after two tight overs then nearly finished off the game in 11 balls where he picked up 4 wickets for just 2 runs. Opener and captain S Everest was Warren's first victim after a battling 64 ball 16 runs. Stirlands were down and almost out on 37 for 8 after 23 overs with Priory just needing one wicket. However last man in A Munro had other ideas as he showed the rest of his team how to bat with a cameo 14 ball 17 runs of hard hitting before Bain bowled him to finish the innings and game with the young Stirlands team all out for just 60 runs in just 27.1 overs.
Joe Warren's fine spell of 4 for 14 in 6 overs rewarded him with the Shore Design Man of the Match. Despite picking up maximum points Priory still need to do well against Worthing tomorrow at home. Bottom side Keymer and Hassocks also picked up 30 points on Saturday to be just 8 points behind on the last day of the league season. However the team should feel pleased with a much improved performance putting together two good halves of a match for the first time this year!
Sussex County League 2nd XI Division 2
Saturday 21 August 2010
Lewes Priory 2nds v Glynde & Beddingham 2nds at Glynde
LPCC 116 all out in 40.4 overs (0 points), GBCC 120-1 in 27.4 overs (30 points)
After a delayed start Lewes lost another toss and were put into bat. In only 11 overs Priory were 25 for 3 and struggling. Richard Eborn and Tom Prideaux de Lacy then tried fighting back and dug in for a further 13 overs before de Lacy fell on 15 bowled by Lee Atkinson with the score up to 65. Eborn continued to bat as wickets fell at the other end far too frequently leaving Priory on 70-6. Elliot Hogan managed a stand of 22 before Eborn rashly tried driving a straight delivery from Atkinson and was bowled for 38 after 82 balls of defiance.
Unfortunately despite a stand of 24 for the 8th wicket between Hogan (12) and Brad Hambly (13) Lewes were soon all out for 116 after 40.4 overs. Atkinson's patient and consistant seam bowling brought him 4 for 40 in 20 unchanged overs. Jack Fingerneissl also opened and picked up 3 for 19 off his 7 overs. Darren Howard picked up 3 for 25 in his 9.4 overs.
Glynde started briskly after an early wicket by Hambly in the 4th over with the score on 7. However it was all Glynde after that and despite frequently changing the bowling Glynde raced towards the meagre total. The opener Phil Adams steadily accumulated runs while Darren Howard found the small boundaries regularly. The only chance Lewes had was a mis hit off the spin bowling of de Lacy which was dropped at long on. It took Glynde just 27.4 overs to reach the score and a comfortable 30 point victory. Adams was 33 not out and Howard 66 not out off just 74 balls.
Priory need to seriously turn things around as Keymer & Hassocks are now just 8 points behind with just 2 games to go at the bottom of the table. Tomorrow they face Stirlands at the Stanley Turner Ground. There was no Shore Design Man of the Match.

Sussex County League 2nd XI Division 2
Lewes Priory 2nds v Pulborough 2nds at the STG, Lewes
PCC 11-0 (7 overs) - Match abandoned due to rain
Lewes won the toss and elected to bowl. After 1.2 overs came off for rain. An hour later started again but after 7 overs with the score only on 11 came off for rain again. Had an early tea after a further hour's wait. At 3.30pm abandoned the game as the square was waterlogged. Even though the rain had just stopped the game was unlikely to start in time to get a minimum of 70 overs in as required by the league.
Saturday 7 August 2010
Sussex County League 2nd XI Division 2
Lewes Priory 2nds v Three Bridges 2nds at Three Bridges
TBCC 209-6 dec (51 overs) - 30 points, beat LPCC 138 (41.4 overs) - 3 points
On winning the toss for a change Lewes decided to gamble and bowl first knowing that if they didn't win they wouldn't pick up many points. Unfortunately that is exactly what happened.
The Lewes openers Alex Ham and Joe Warren started well and struck early in the 4th over. However the skipper M Church dug in with H Smith as the pitch aided the bowlers with uneven bounce and the ball was swinging in the overcast conditions. They put on 49 for the 2nd wicket to get Three Bridges up to 57 before Church was out on 23 caught behind off Brad Hambly. Smith was next out on 30 LBW to Simon Birch. This brought together S Alborough and M Williams. Williams played sensibly driving along the deck while Alborough was more aggressive going the aerial route but both found the boundary regularly in their stand of 70 in just 14 overs. Richard Eborn's sharp fielding ran out Alborough on 57. Another wicket fell straight away but Williams continued accumulating runs.
Three Bridges finally declared after 51 overs on 209 for 6, Williams 47 not out, and 15 year old M Rose on 24 not out. Ham bowled well in his two spells to finish 1 for 78 off 18 overs. The bowling and fielding was an improvement for Priory.
Richard Eborn and David Tungate started the reply well with a stand of 70 before Eborn was suckered into going over the top when the slow left armer M Rose changed ends and was out stumped on 30. Unfortunately this started the collapse as wickets fell almost every following over bowled by the young Rose! Tungate was bowled on 48 in the 29th over with the score on 93. The experienced Richard Seager could only watch from the other end as 7 Lewes batsmen fell for a total of just 5 runs! Only Ham offered some resistance with 20 runs. It was embarrassing to watch from the sidelines as players just gave their wickets away. Seager was left stranded on 21 as the last wicket fell with the score just 138 after 41.4 overs. Rose ended with figures of 8 for 28 off 15 overs. Only M Williams picked up another wicket as the last one was a comical run out...
David Tungate was the Shore Design Man of the Match producing the best performance; top scoring with the bat and a sharp catch at mid off. Unfortunately Priory must put together two good halves to a match if they hope to prosper in games and with only 4 matches left, time is running out...Tomorrow they host Pulborough at the Stanley Turner Ground. Let's hope they are quick learners.
Saturday 24 July 2010
Lewes Priory 2nds v Roffey 2nds at the STG, Lewes
LPCC 131 (37.1 overs) - 2 points, lost to RCC 133-0 (34.3 overs) - 30 points
Lewes lost the toss for the 10th time this season and were inserted again. Losing 3 wickets in the first 10 overs to be on 38 runs meant Priory had an uphill battle with supposedly the strongest side out on paper this year so far! Nick Beechey and Simon Birch tried to put the batting back on track with a 40 run 4th wicket stand but Beechey fell for 21 when on 78. Birch carried on his good form from last week but unfortunately couldn't go on once in. Elliot Hogan stayed with him to put on 35 for the 6th wicket before Birch was bowled for 44. Hogan dug in and batted on but had no help at the other end and wickets fell far too regularly and was stranded on 4 not out having stayed in for almost an hour and faced 46 balls. Priory only amassed 131 in 37.1 overs leaving Roffey far too many overs and way too few runs to have any hope of a positive result against the division's leaders. D Liley and M Davies both bowled well for Roffey and picked up 3 wickets apiece.
Lewes needed a miraculous improvement on their bowling of previous weeks to put up a fight. Encouragingly both Chris Dacey and Matt Commin (back for one week only) found edges but none went to hand as the experienced Mick Webb and young Craig Skilton weathered the storm. Changing the bowling regularly in the hope of a wicket Priory tried in vain to find a breakthrough. It should have come when Alex Ham forced Webb to miss cut a short delivery straight to point but an easy chance was spilled, summing up the day! Although Ham and Joe Warren bowled tightly no wicket was to come and the spin of Birch and Elliot Hogan's steady seamers were called upon. Birch returned the best figures of 8 overs for just 11 runs but no wicket. Commin and Dacey were called back into the attack in the faint hope of a breakthrough but Roffey eased past the target to end on 133 for 0. They won in just 34.3 overs by 10 wickets and picked up a maximum 30 points to strengthen their position at the top of the table. Lewes managed just 2 points their worst result of the year, the first real time that the batting had failed.
Although not very difficult, the only positive of the day was that the bowling was much better than the batting, managing to trouble a strong batting line-up. However the fielding still needs to improve. Let's hope this week was just a blip on the usual batting performance.
There was no Shore Design Man of the Match as this performance did not deserve one. Luckily Lewes have a week off this week so can regroup and take in what needs to be done to end the season on a high. Next week Priory visit Three Bridges who are 2nd in the table...
Saturday 17 July 2010
Sussex County League 2nd XI Division 2
Lewes Priory 2nds lost to Chichester Priory Park 2nds at Chichester
LPCC 242-6 (53 overs) - 11 points, CPPCC 246-3 (41.4 overs) - 22 points
Losing yet another toss meant that Lewes batted first on a very hard and flat wicket. Despite the batsman-friendly pitch Lewes lost their skipper early on again with the score on 12. David Tungate and Alex put together a stand of 51 before Ham fell for 26 LBW to J Heaven. Tungate (27) soon departed as well hooking the left armer Austerberry straight to fine leg. Rashid Khan had to retire hurt as he top edged one into his head. (Despite wearing a helmet the ball slipped through the visor!) This brought Simon Birch, dropped from the 1sts and keen to impress, to the crease with the total just 74. Joined soon after by John Moore, promoted from the 3rds, they put on 99 for the 6th wicket with Birch playing the aggressive role and Moore in support.
Birch was finally bowled by Heaven going for another boundary, he hit 16 fours and a six in his 95. With the score on 214 and only 2.3 overs left Khan returned to the crease. Trying to finish in a flurry he proceeded to hit Heaven's last over for 5 fours to get the total up to 242-6. Moore ended 29 not out. Chichester opener Geffen had figures of 2 for 66 off 14 overs and Heaven 3 for 70 off 11.
Chichester started briskly finding the boundary regularly despite the Lewes openers', Alex Ham and Joe Warren, best efforts. Graeme Bennison and Carver put on 91 for the first wicket before Carver (32) was caught and bowled by Brad Hambly in the 19th over. Bennison fell for 40 to a sharp catch by David Tungate off the leg spin of Simon Birch with the score on 133 after 26 overs. Keeper Edwards and S Taunt then put on 97 for the 3rd wicket before Warren, brought back into the attack, bowled Edwards for 83. Taunt then saw Chichester home with their captain Simon Brice to finish 46 not out after 41.4 overs and a comfortable win. Unfortunately Lewes again couldn't bowl well enough to defend a reasonable score with a few chances goin begging early on that may have changed things. 80 year old John O'Connor tried his best behind the stumps, called up late on Friday with yet another dropout, and probably breaks the record for oldest cricketer to play in the County League!
The Shore design Man of the Match goes to Simon Birch for his batting and bowling, 1 for 47 off 11 overs. Next week Lewes are home to Roffey, a notoriously strong batting side.
Saturday 10 July 2010
Sussex County League 2nd XI Division 2
Lewes Priory beat Keymer & Hassocks at home
K&HCC 204-5 (53 overs) - 14 points, LPCC 205-8 (40.1 overs) - 20 points
On winning the toss Lewes elected to bowl first. After an opening stand of 41 Keymer then lost 3 quick wickets to find themselves on 51 for 3 after 15 overs thanks to the aggressive pace of Chris Dacey who picked up 2 wickets for 35 runs in his spell of 9 overs. Joe Warren picked up the other. On changing Warren after his spell of 7 overs Adam Stapleton, up from the 3rds, broke through again to take two more scalps, both catches, leaving Keymer struggling on 94 for 5 after 26 overs. However Howard Collins and Jamie Patel weathered the storm and Priory tried various bowlers in the vain hope of another wicket and their first points. Duncan Bain's leg spin, although miserly didn't bring about a wicket. He bowled 13 overs for just 23 runs. Elliot Hogan, Rashid Khan and stuart Fielder all failed to break through. Collins (52 no) and Patel (51 no) made an unbroken stand of 110 to get Keymer up to 204 for 5 in the 53 overs. At the halfway point Keymer had 10 points to Priory's none!
Not wishing to fall short in the run chase this week Lewes started solidly until both openers fell with the score on 34 after 10 overs. The introduction of Nicholas Beechey upped the run rate and he battered the bowlers all around the ground. Rashid Khan continued from the previous week and ably supported Beechey with a 40 ball 42. Beechey finally fell to a catch on 59 off 60 balls with the score up to 163 after just 30 overs. What appeared to be a formality to get the remaining runs with 5 wickets in hand and plenty of overs was not to be as Lewes faltered and found runs hard to get and 2 more wickets fell with the score up to 180. Elliot Hogan batted sensibly accumulating runs and had support from Stapleton for a bit before he fell with the scores level on 204 for 8. It took a nervy 9 balls to go before a wide settled the game bringing Priory their first win of the season and 20 valuable points. Hogan ended up 33 not out. However the Shore Design Man of the Match went to Beechey who had pulled Lewes to within touching distance of victory with his knock. Jamie Carter finished with 3 for 46 off 12.1 overs and George Duplock 3 for 35 off 6.
Tomorrow Priory must travel to Chichester to see if they can turn the season around now.
